What are some common types of scams?

1. Advance fee fraud

A scammer requests fees upfront or personal information in return for goods, services, money or rewards that they never supply.

Scammers invent convincing and seemingly genuine reasons for requesting payment, such as to cover fees or taxes.

They often ask for payment by international wire transfer.

These scams are commonly mass-marketed with scammers sending them out to thousands of people all over the world at the same time, usually by mail or email.

2. Lottery, sweepstakes and competition scams

An email, letter or text message from an overseas lottery or sweepstakes company arrives from out of nowhere.

It says you have won a lot of money or fantastic prizes in a lottery or sweepstakes competition you did not enter.

These scams try to trick you into giving money upfront or your personal details in order to receive the prize.

Scammers typically claim that you need to pay fees or taxes before your winnings or prize can be released.

You may also have to call or text a premium rate phone number to claim your prize.

Remember you cannot win a prize if you haven’t entered.

3. Dating and romance scams

Scammers create fake profiles on legitimate dating websites.

They use these profiles to try to enter into a relationship with you so they can get a hold of your money and personal details.

The scammer will develop a strong rapport with you then ask for money to help cover costs associated with illness, injury, travel or a family crisis.

Scammers seek to exploit your emotions by pulling on your heart strings. Sometimes the scammers will take months and months to build up the rapport.

4. Computer hacking

Phishing emails are commonly used by scammers to trick you into giving them access to your computer.

They ‘fish’ for your personal details by encouraging you to click on a link or attachment.

If you click, malicious software will be installed and the hacker will have access to files and information stored on your computer.

A phishing email often appears to come from an organisation that you know and trust, like a bank or financial institution, asking you to enter your account password on a fake copy of the site’s login page.

If you provide your account details, the scammer can hack into your account and take control of your profile.

5. Online shopping, classified and auction scams

Scammers like shopping online for victims. Not getting what you paid for is a common scam targeting online shoppers.

A scammer will sell a product and send a faulty or inferior quality item, or nothing at all. They may also pretend to sell a product just to gather your credit card or bank account details.

These scams can also be found on reputable online classified pages.

An online auction scam involves a scammer claiming that you have a second chance to buy an item that you placed a bid on because the winner has pulled out.

The scammer will ask you to pay outside of the auction site’s secure payment facility.

If you do, your money will be lost and the auction site will not be able to help you.

6. Banking, credit card and online account scams

Scammers send emails or text messages that appear to be from your bank, a financial institution or an online payment service.

They usually claim that there is a problem with your account and request that you verify your details on a fake but convincing copy of the bank’s website.

Card skimming is the copying of information from the magnetic strip of a credit card or automatic teller machine (ATM) card.

Scammers skim your card by putting a discreet attachment on an ATM or EFTPOS machine. They may even install a camera to capture your pin.

Once your card is skimmed, scammers can create copies and make charges to your account.

7. Small business scams

If you own a small business you can be targeted by scams such as the issuing of fake bills for unwanted or unauthorised listings, advertisements, products or services.

A well-known example is where you receive a bill for a listing in a supposedly well-known business directory.

Scammers trick you to sign up by disguising the offer as an outstanding invoice or a free entry, but with a hidden subscription agreement in the fine print.

Scammers can also call your business pretending that a service or product has already been ordered and ask for payment over the phone.

8. Job and employment scams

These scams involve offers to work from home or set up and invest in a business opportunity. Scammers promise a job, high salary or large investment return following initial upfront payments.

These payments may be for a business plan, training course, software, uniforms, security clearance, taxes or fees.

These scams are often promoted through spam email or advertisements in well-known classifieds, including websites.

9. Golden opportunity and gambling scams

Scams often begin with an unexpected phone call or email from a scammer offering a not-to-be-missed high return or guaranteed investment in shares, real estate, options or foreign currency trading.

While it may seem convincing, in reality the scammer will take your money and you will never receive the promised returns.

Another scam promises to accurately predict the results of horse races, sports events, stock market movements or lotteries.

Scammers promise you huge returns based on past results and trends. In order to participate, you may be asked to pay for membership fees, special calculators, newsletter subscriptions or computer software programs.

10. Charity and medical scams

Scammers are unscrupulous and take advantage of people who want to donate to a good cause or find an answer to a health problem.

Charity scams involve scammers collecting money by pretending to work for a legitimate cause or charity, or a fictitious one they have created.

Often scammers will exploit a recent natural disaster or crisis that has been in the news.

They may also play on your emotions by claiming to collect for a cause that will secure your sympathy, for example to help sick children.

Medical scams offer a range of products and services that can appear to be legitimate alternative medicines, usually promising quick and effective remedies for serious medical conditions.

The treatments are often promoted using false testimonies from people who have been cured.

Customs Scam Alert

The Person behind the below story
Name: Henry William, the most dangerous customs cheater sends friend requests to unknown persons mainly targeting woman.
Slowly makes them trust towards him and he will say that he will send you gifts and parcel and sends this type of pics after that you will get a call to clear customs clearance once you paid that amount you will be asked to pay other amount this process continues, it's happen to one of my friends. Please be care of this person, please share to save others from his trap.
New Delhi, Dec 31 (PTI) If you get a phone call or email claiming customs officers have stopped clearance of gift or parcel for want of a certain amount towards import duty, then beware, you are being duped.

The customs department has been getting a number of complaints from across the country on this latest modus operandi of fraudsters, following which a precautionary alert has been issued.

"Instances have come to the notice that number of persons are getting telephonic calls as well as e-mail and letters by post asking them to deposit money in individual bank accounts claiming that customs officer have stopped clearance/release of gift parcels/rewards unless a certain amount is deposited towards customs duties, penalties etc. and a bank account number is also given where the money is to be deposited," the Delhi customs said in a public notice.

Another common modus operandi is to send an e-mail stating that the recipient has won a prize or a parcel has been sent and money needs to be deposited, it said.

"All such calls/mail are fake with the sole intention of cheating the public. The general public is hereby notified and forewarned not to respond to such fake calls/mails as customs officers do not make telephonic calls or send such mails to deposit amounts in individual bank accounts," the recently- issued notice said.

The customs department is not responsible in any way for such fraudulent incidents and complaints, if any, in this regard may be made to the police, it suggested.
In a recent case, a daughter of a senior IPS officer has been duped of Rs 50,000, a senior custom officer said.

He said the victim was asked to deposit Rs 50,000 in a bank account of a person she befriended on the Internet.

"The accused claimed to be a native of London and chatted using a fraudulent ID. The girl said that the accused claimed to have been stopped by customs officers for want of clearance of an expensive gift brought by him for her. The girl then deposited the money in his account only to realise it later that she was duped," the officer said.

Another such case had come from Hyderabad where a woman was duped of a large amount of money following the same modus operandi, he said.

"What is happening in a majority of cases is that accused pose as a single girl/woman living abroad. After befriending victims over the Internet and at times through phone calls, the accused would then seek money in a bank account for payment of customs duty against a precious gift claimed to have been brought by her. People get in this trap and deposit money in the account only to lose it," the officer said. PTI AKV AAR

What is Mini-LED display tech and why is everyone talking about it?

CES 2021 hasn’t even officially begun, but we already know one tech trend that will dominate the tech conference. No, it isn’t 5G or self-driving tech but mini-LED displays that will be seen across swanky TVs this year. LG to TCL, every major television manufacturer has plans to show off new TVs with a mini-LED display at this year’s all-digital CES. While many see mini-LED as an emerging TV tech, some estimate that mini-LED technology will eventually come to mainstream laptops, tablets and even smartphones. But what is the brand new mini-LED tech and why are companies want to replace OLED displays with this futuristic display tech?

What is Mini-LED display technology?

Let’s get straight to the point. The micro-LED display is an improved version of LCD technology. Most modern LCD TVs use LEDs, or Light Emitting Diodes for their backlights. Mini LED, which is sometimes referred to as a sub-millimeter light-emitting diode, is a better version of the traditional LCD display.

Mini LEDs work similarly to LEDs used in LED TVs or QLED TVs but are much smaller. At about 200 microns or 0.008 inches across, mini-LEDs are about a fifth of the size of the standard LEDs in use in LCD panels. Since they are smaller in size, more of them can be packed into a screen In fact, they provide much better control of the backlighting and this leads to better image quality.

But makes mini-LED display technology so interesting is that you get the same level of contrast and brightness similar to OLED. Having a backlit means, Mini LED-capable TVs can deliver greater brightness and deeper blacks but at a much lower price. Think of mini-LED tech as an affordable version of OLED, without screen burn-in issues.

Advantages of mini-LEDs over OLEDs

*Greater contrast and improved black levels than OLEDs.

*TV manufacturers get more control over dimming zones, meaning how bright or dim parts of the screen can go.

*Less expensive to make than OLEDs.

*Mini LED tech is better at displaying HDR content.

Which TV brands plan to launch Mini-LED TVs?

Since last year, TCL has been selling Mini-LED TVs in the market. In fact, TCL was the first major TV manufacturer to launch mini-LED TVs. At CES 2021, the Chinese company said it plans to launch a new range of TVs with the next-gen Mini-LED technology. LG meanwhile says its QNED TVs will use Mini-LED backlight technology and the new range will be shown off for the first time at the tech show. Samsung hasn’t announced any mini-LED TVs yet, but we expect the South Korean major to be a big proponent of this display tech in the future.

Several Apple products to feature mini-LED displays this year

But while mini-LED on TVs or laptops hasn’t exploded yet, the technology might get a big boost once Apple starts to adopt this display tech. TF International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that several Apple products will launch with mini-LED display tech in 2021. Kou says mini-LED displays could come to the high-end iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro this year. In fact, Apple is rumoured to be working on as many as six devices with the new display tech. What does this mean for people who buy the new iPad Pro or MacBook Pro? Well, we have to wait for Apple to release these products first.

01/4This symptom may not be worth worrying about, as per experts

With the onset of the novel coronavirus, millions of people entered a state of turmoil. The symptoms, ranging from mild to severe, developed an air of confusion, as most of the signs resembled the symptoms of other diseases and viral infections, such as flu, common cold and seasonal allergies. While fever, dry cough, fatigue, loss of sense of smell and taste and other medical complications can indicate a possibility of COVID-19, this one symptom, according to experts, needs no worrying and can be wavered off. Read on to find out more.

02/4Which symptom indicates you're safe from COVID?

Sneezing, like other symptoms of COVID-19, can be associated with many other medical conditions. A sneeze is a powerful and an involuntary expulsion of air that aims to remove irritants from your nose and throat. While cold, cough and fever along with sneezing could be linked to the coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if you're only experiencing sneezing as a symptom, it is not a sign of COVID-19. Besides, the CDC does not list sneezing as a symptom of coronavirus.

03/4Other causes of sneezing?

Sneezing can be caused due to various other reasons. According to the CDC, sneezing is considered a common symptom of a cold and a flu symptom sometimes. In case you have a cold and a mild fever, it may be followed by a sore throat and a runny nose which could be accompanied by sneezing. Apart from that, sneezing can also be triggered by seasonal allergies. In a comparative analysis between COVID-19 and seasonal allergies, the CDC claimed that sneezing could be a more likely symptom of seasonal allergies than COVID-19.

Besides that, sneezing can also occur due to environmental changes. As per experts, cold and dry air can irritate your nasal passages and this can cause you to sneeze. It is a very common condition, which alone cannot indicate COVID-19 in a person.

Snow disrupts life in Kashmir, lifeline highway shut for fourth day

People walk past stranded vehicles on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway during heavy snowfall, at Qazigund in Anantnag district of South Kashmir on January 5.(PTI)

The lifeline Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed for the fourth day on Wednesday as fresh landslides were reported along the only road that connects the Valley with the rest of the country. Officials said the stranded vehicles along the highway have been taken to safer places amid continuous rain and snowfall.

“Jammu Srinagar NHW [national highway] blocked due to snow accumulation at Jawahar Tunnel and Landslides/mudslides/shooting stones at Samroli, Magarkot, Panthyal, Marog, Cafeteria mor, Dhalwas, Nashri @JmuKmrPolice,” tweeted Jammu & Kashmir traffic police.

A group of tourists from Rajasthan had a narrow escape along the highway near Panthal when a landslide hit the vehicle they were travelling in. Police said the tourists were rescued and were safe.

Heavy snowfall since the weekend has disrupted life across Kashmir, especially in South Kashmir and the upper reaches of North and Central Kashmir. Places like Kulgam district in South Kashmir have received up to six feet of snow. The heavy snowfall has prompted authorities to order rationing of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders as well as establish helplines at district headquarters.

Residents have complained that snow has not been cleared at many places and hampered the public movement.

The Jammu & Kashmir Disaster Management Authority separately issued an avalanche alert. “Medium level avalanche warning has been issued for upper reaches of Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Jawahar Tunnel, Doda, Kishtwar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Kupwara and Tanghdar. Similarly, low-level avalanche warning has been issued for upper reaches of Gulmarg, Gurez, Kanzalwan, and Sonmarg,” said an official of the authority.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the weather was expected to improve from Thursday. “Present weather conditions are likely to continue till late tonight [Wednesday] or early tomorrow [Thursday]. We expect a significant improvement in weather from tomorrow...[Thursday] in Jammu and Kashmir. With that cold wave will return from January 7th [Thursday] onwards with warmer days and colder nights,” IMD said in a bulletin. It added Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 0.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Bird flu outbreak in four states, Centre issues advisory to contain spread

Health workers in protective suits prepare to set fire after culling ducks following the detection of H5N8 strain of bird flu among domestic birds in Alappuzha district, Tuesday, January 05, 2021. (AP)

The Centre on Wednesday said that Avian Influenza, or the bird flu outbreak, had so far been reported at 12 epicentres across four states — Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh — and issued advisories to contain further spread of the infection.

Of the 12 epicenters, the bird flu has been reported in crows in Baran, Kota, Jhalawar region of Rajasthan as well as Mandsaur, Indore, Malwa areas of Madhya Pradesh. In Himachal Pradesh, the infection was found in migratory birds in Kangra region and in poultry ducks in Kottayam, Alappuzha (4 epicentres) in Kerala.

Avian influenza or bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease caused by Influenza Type A viruses, which generally affects poultry birds such as chickens and turkeys. There are many strains of the virus; some of them are mild and may merely cause a dip in egg production or other mild symptoms among chickens, while others are severe and lethal.

The Union Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry have asked other states to keep a vigil on any unusual mortality amongst birds. The current bird flu outbreak comes few months after India on September 30, 2020, declared the country free from the disease. India notified the first outbreak of Avian Influenza in 2006.

Here are the latest developments:

MP bans chicken import from southern states

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Wednesday said that no chicken consignments from Kerala and other southern states would be procured for the next 10 days in view of the bird flu scare in MP.

Talking to reporters in Indore, Chouhan also said his government was issuing directives to ban the transportation of chicken consignments from these states to the border districts of Madhya Pradesh.

“Bird flu symptoms were found in chickens in Kerala and other southern states. Therefore, we have decided that no chicken from these states will be allowed to enter Madhya Pradesh for the next 10 days,” Chouhan was quoted as saying.

Chouhan also reviewed the bird flu situation with officials in Bhopal, after mass death of crows was reported from some districts of the state, including Indore, Agar Malwa and Mandsaur. “I have reviewed the bird flu situation in the state today. There is no cause of worry. We are keeping a constant watch on the situation,” he said.

Can diabetics eat jaggery? Know the dos and don'ts of natural sweeteners for blood sugar management

Many people, irrespective of if they have developed type 2 diabetes or not, are now turning to natural sweeteners in a bid to eat and be healthier. Know how safe is jaggery for diabetics.

   KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Diabetics are recommended to steer clear of food items with excess sugar, in order to keep their blood sugar levels managed.
  • A very popular natural sweetener is Jaggery or Gud, consumed widely in India especially winters.
  • Know if diabetics can safely consume jaggery, and if natural sweeteners do not lead to a spike in blood sugar levels.

New Delhi: Type 2 diabetes is a health condition that can cause blood sugar levels to rise. When the body is unable to produce any insulin the hormone responsible for the breakdown of sugar, or the cells of the body are unable to use that insulin to break down glucose due to various reasons, it leads to a spike in blood sugar levels. If not managed well, high blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia, can cause serious health complications, so much so that it can even damage vital organs such as the kidneys and heart.

People who develop type 2 diabetes have to be extra careful of what they eat and when they eat. They are recommended to steer clear of sweets, sugar, and any food products that may contain a lot of added sugar. They are also advised to consume small, frequent meals in order to keep their blood sugar levels stable.

The truth about natural sweeteners

A lot of people, irrespective of whether they have developed type 2 diabetes or not, are now turning to natural sweeteners in a bid to eat and be healthier. Some popular natural sweeteners include honey and jaggery and they are both commonly used as alternatives to processed sugar. They are believed to be healthier in the sense that they are not as processed as sugar and, therefore, may contain fewer chemicals, preservatives or undergo processing, and that is true to a great extent. When compared with processed white or brown sugar, jaggery or honey are considered better and healthier options.

Does that mean diabetics can eat jaggery without worrying?

Diabetics are recommended to avoid anything sweet as much as they can in order to manage their blood sugar levels. This is because the food we eat is generally rich in carbs and some form of sugar, which is enough to keep the blood sugar levels stable and prevent them from dropping too low. While the popular notion is that jaggery is healthier than sugar, for diabetics, they may in fact be the same. Therefore, diabetics should consume jaggery in moderation.

While jaggery is a natural sweetener and overall healthier than sugar, it is still pretty high in sugar content. Therefore, it can lead to a spike in blood sugar levels for diabetics. Jaggery has a high glycemic index of 84.4, which makes it unfit for consumption by diabetics.

Bottom line

Consuming natural sweeteners instead of sugar or other artificial sweeteners may be healthier, but it does not mean that one can consume them as much as they like, and expect to stay healthy. Remember that moderation is the key, whether you have diabetes or not. Consumption of natural sweeteners in excess, even when you do not have diabetes, can lead to unintended weight gain, and increase the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases.
