Wonder why Apple stopped giving chargers with iPhones? Here's the reason
Apple had tackled the criticism it faced by stating that this move was for the benefit of the environment. The firm has now released some figures which showcase the impact made by its decision to stop giving out charging adapter with iPhones
Apple had tackled the criticism it faced by stating that this move was for the benefit of the environment. The firm has now released some figures which showcase the impact made by its decision to stop giving out charging adapter with iPhones.
Apple has stated that that power adapters use large amount of materials such as plastic, copper, and zinc for manufacturing. Apple was able to conserve 8.61 lakh tons of copper, zinc and metal by not giving out charging adapters with its iPhones, the firm stated in its Environmental Progress Report.
Apple explained that by not giving out a charger it was able to reduce the size of the iPhone box thus making the packaging process more efficient. "Leaving out those adapters was a bold change for Apple, and a necessary one for our planet," said Apple on the environment page of its website.
"Since removing them from iPhone and Apple Watch packaging last year, we've avoided mining a significant amount of materials from the earth, and we've eliminated the emissions that come from processing and transporting them," stated Apple.
In its Environmental Progress Report, Apple states that it was able to reduce CO2 emissions to 22.6 million tons from 25.1 million tons in 2019. The firm claims that by introducing the M1 chip for its Mac devices, the firm was able to reduce its overall carbon footprint by 34 per cent.

COVID-19 Vaccine: All above age 18 eligible for inoculation from 1 May, announces Centre as coronavirus cases surge
This comes as India's total tally of COVID-19 cases crossed the 1.50-crore mark on Monday, with around 25 lakh cases being added in just 15 days
With the COVID-19 curve showing no signs of easing across the country, the Centre on Monday announced that the third phase of the coronavirus vaccination drive will open for all persons above age 18 from 1 May.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the meeting, Modi said that the government had been working hard for over a year to ensure that maximum numbers of Indians are able to get the vaccine in the shortest possible time. He added that India is vaccinating people at a world record pace and will continue this with even greater momentum.
The government issued a press release stating that the decision was taken as part of the 'liberalised and accelerated Phase 3 strategy of COVID-19 vaccination'.
Under the third phase of the vaccination drive commencing next month, the vaccine manufacturers would supply 50 percent of their monthly Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) released doses to the central government and would be free to supply the remaining 50 percent doses to state governments and in the open market.
Manufacturers would have to make an advance declaration of the price for 50 percent supply that would be available to the state governments and in the open market before 1 May, 2021, an official statement said.
Based on this price, state governments, private hospitals, industrial establishments, etc would be able to procure vaccine doses from the manufacturers.
Private hospitals would have to procure their supplies of COVID-19 vaccine exclusively from the 50 per cent supply earmarked for entities other than those coming through the central government channel.
The private vaccination providers would need to transparently declare their self-set vaccination price and the eligibility through this channel would be opened up to all adults, that is everyone above the age of 18, the statement added.
This comes as India on Monday recorded 2,73,810 new coronavirus cases, an unprecedented figure since the pandemic broke out in January 2020, to take its tally of infections to 1,50,61,919. With 1,619 deaths, the toll rose to 1,78,769.
The government announcement comes the same day as British prime minister Boris Johnson cancelled his planned visit to India next week due to the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases in the country.
India has begun inoculating its citizens earlier this year in January, using two COVID-19 vaccines – Serum Institute of India's Covishield developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca and Bharat Biotech's made-in-India vaccine, Covaxin.
So far, the government had allowed vaccinations only for frontline workers and those above 45.
8 iPhone Battery Saving Tips That You Must Know
Because of the way charge cycles work, keeping your battery from being depleted too fast can lengthen its lifespan.
In other words, battery saving tips will help. Here are a few of our favorites that you should keep in mind.
- Keep your brightness as low as you can stand.
- Make sure you always have the latest up-to-date version of iOS installed on your device.
- Use Safari instead of third-party browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox.
- Background App Refresh, which lets an app automatically update content in the background, is a notorious battery killer. Try going into Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disabling it for apps that don’t need it.
- Location Services is a similar story. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and disable it for apps that don’t need to know where you are. At the very least, set it to While Using for apps that do need your location.
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data. Set Fetch to a longer time interval, or alternatively, set it to Manual to save the most battery life.
- Navigate to the Battery menu to figure out which apps are eating up the most battery life. Deal with them accordingly.
- If you use Spotify or Apple Music, try listening to music via Wi-FI instead of over cellular. Or, better yet, download songs to your device for offline listening.
Apple defines an officially degraded battery as any one that contains less than 80 percent of its original battery capacity.
A degraded battery will no longer be able to pump out the same amount of power as a fresh one. That can cause problems during times of peak power draw, such as when you’re running CPU-intensive applications.
In some cases, hitting that peak power threshold will cause an iPhone to randomly shut down.
Of course, Apple has baked in a failsafe to prevent random shutdowns: power throttling. By slowing down the performance of your iPhone, there’s less demand on the battery and less chance of a random shutdown.
In recent versions of iOS, Apple has given users the option of turning off power management. This will result in more random shutdowns in severely degraded batteries. Users will need to weigh the pros and cons of each themselves.
Put simply, it’s nearly impossible to track what’s a “normal” rate of battery decay.
That’s largely because battery degradation depends on how often you use your smartphone and what you use your smartphone for, among other factors.
Apple says that it should take about 500 complete charge cycles for a fresh battery to degrade to 80 percent.
A charge cycle is defined as a device that’s completely charged being depleted to 0 percent.
Of course, partially charging your iPhone from whatever point it’s at will eventually add up to complete charge cycles.
Based on some rudimentary math, a degradation of 1 percent of battery capacity per month may be normal. That’s if you frequently use, deplete and charge your smartphone.
But, again, so much of this is variable that it’s hard to give a concrete number. Your mileage may vary drastically.
Essentially, anything that will run through your iPhone’s battery quickly can degrade it, since you’ll be using up your charge cycles.
Power-hungry apps like those that use Background App Refresh and Location Services are common culprits.
As far as other factors, they’re pretty varied, too.
For example, if your smartphone gets too hot while charging, it can irreparably damage your battery — in turn, reducing your battery’s overall lifespan and capacity.
A good tip is to take off any case on your iPhone before charging and to ensure that you never charge your iPhone in the sun or in hot ambient temperatures.
Some users report faster battery degradation when using USB-C fast charging, while others claim leaving your iPhone on the charger for too long can sap battery capacity.
